Once you invent something, get ready for people to start using it as a sex toy. The Wartenberg wheel/pinwheel was designed by a neurologist to test patients’ nerve reactions, but someone realized it would also work as a sensation and/or BDSM toy. Good Vibrations was kind enough to send me their pinwheel to review, and all I can say is… wow. Or eek. It all depends on how you want to use it.
GoodVibes’ pinwheel is made of stainless steel and has a blue plastic handle. It comes in a pouch which you will want to keep for storage. If you leave this thing outside a pouch, it will inevitably poke and scratch whatever it comes in contact with, including you. Be extra careful to keep the pinwheel away from children and animals, because those metal points are sharp. Also, if you’re going to use it for BDSM play, keep a first aid kit handy, just in case.
Don’t be scared off, though. The pinwheel is fun and easy to use without involving BDSM. Held softly at an acute angle against the skin, it feels very good. It’s pleasantly tingly, and can be added to a massage or gentle sensation play without fear. You won’t hurt someone with this toy unless you want to.
Which brings us to BDSM play. Having my skin pierced is a hard limit for me — I would not be okay with someone making me bleed. Therefore the pinwheel, when used with pressure at a right angle against my skin, terrifies me. I always feel that with just a bit more pressure, it could go through my skin. Also, when used in this way, it hurts. It’s pokey and prickly and seriously painful, and brings me right to the edge of how much pain I can tolerate. It makes me try to lay perfectly still, fearing what will happen if I move.
The pinwheel makes me a sodding mess, basically. So of course K and I both love it. Still, it’s not something we’re going to use all the time. I could happily be flogged, spanked, slapped, tied down, ordered around, and called names almost every day — but the amount of terror and pain K causes when he uses the pinwheel on me for BDSM play would be too much to deal with on a regular basis.
The pinwheel feels so good in sensation play, I think nearly everyone would enjoy it. And when it comes to BDSM, this little toy doesn’t fool around. You could seriously harm someone with it. It’s definitely our highest-level BDSM toy so far. It makes me quiver and whimper in fear. Highly recommended.

In all honesty this “toy” scares me a little. I’m a fraidy-cat like that.
I’m pleased to hear that it can be used lightly and it causes a nice tingle. But, I’m scared to try it. [There is a chance of needing a first aid kit?! Seeing blood makes me faint, and seriously queasy. Not fun.]
There’s a chance of needing a first aid kit only if you use it for BDSM. It’s a really easy toy to control — if you don’t want pressure, and just want tingles, that’s all you’ll get. But yeah, it can definitely be scary, which is either a big plus or a huge minus, depending on what you like.
Aww. The KITTY ATES IT! I love the kitty.
I’ve had a Wartenburg wheel for awhile. I love mine. It’s so easy to be as gentle or as firm as you want.
It’s all about pressure and how the person uses it. This was one of the first toys we purchased a couple years ago and I still firmly believe everyone should try it.
